Volunteer Information Packet & Application

Common Questions:

Q: What kind of animals need foster care?

Kittens under 4 weeks old; cats with medical conditions or injuries; cats in need of some socialization; cats who have been in the shelter for too long and are in need of a normal home environment for a while so they can act like a normal cat!

Q: Can I become a foster volunteer if I have pets?

Yes, we welcome pet owners as foster volunteers! There is always a health risk when exposing your pets to other animals, in any setting. However, the risk is minimal if your pets are vaccinated and in good health.

Q: How long do animals need to stay in foster care?

A typical stay is 2 weeks - 2 months, depending on the needs
of the animal(s) in your care.

Q: What expenses are involved with foster care?

Foster families provide housing, food, bedding & toys. They also
provide exercise, socialization & lots of love! MGHS provides
medical care, including vaccination, medications and spay/neuter
surgery, as well any special food that the animal might need.

A Paw and a Prayer

Foster parenting...tough stuff. Emotional.
But oh, is it ever rewarding! Foster parents save lives, no doubt about it. Since we do not have an adoption center (yet!), our foster parents make all the difference in the world to our animals by giving them a safe, temporary home where they can learn to trust, heal if needed, and become the awesome companion animals they were born to be!

Interested? It takes a special kind of heart to be a foster parent. But if you love animals, and really want to help, it doesn't get any better than fostering. (unless you adopt, of course!)

"This has been a life-changing experience...it's a deeply satisfying thing to save the life of an animal. Getting the chance to see the fear and pain in the eyes of an animal that first comes to me, and watching it slowly change to trust and happiness...that is worth everything!"

"It's overwhelming, the emotion...but worth it all. I would choose to do it all over again."

"People always ask me how I can give these animals up? Because there are more little furry faces who need my help."

The Madison-Greene Humane Society is deeply grateful for the love, energy and caring, not to mention all the plain old hard work that our foster parents invest in their furry pupils. Thank you, dear guardians, thank you for all you do.

I Am An Animal Rescuer
Anonymous

We rescuers are a mostly quiet but determined army,
and we are making a difference every day.

There is nothing more necessary than warming an orphan,
nothing more rewarding than saving a life, and no higher recognition than watching them thrive.

There is no greater joy than seeing a kitten play who, only days ago, was too weak to eat.

By the love of those who I've been privileged to rescue, I have been rescued.

I know what true unconditional love really is, for I've seen it shining in the eyes of so many grateful for so little.

I am an Animal Rescuer.
My work is never done.
My home is never quiet.
My heart is always full.
