The Inspiration Behind
Molly's Cupboard...

A Ruckersville resident visited the Greene County Animal Shelter with the hopes of finding a new member of her family. What she found there was heartbreaking...many of the dogs in the shelter had notes at the front of their runs saying "Owner Surrendered" on them.

In many cases, she learned, this meant that there was someone out there for each of these animals who was forced to make a heartrending decision when times got too tough and they couldn't afford to take care of their family pet any longer. There are assistance programs where people can get help to put food on their table, but no organized place for people to go for assistance to take care of their pets. Many people are left without a choice.

Her visit haunted her long after she left the shelter - the faces of the beautiful and friendly dogs left behind, and what could possibly be done to prevent such a decision from having to be made by a pet owner. She talked with her aunt, a fellow animal lover who recently had lost her beloved Irish setter, Molly. Their discussion sparked an idea to collect pet food and offer it to people who needed help making ends meet.

Molly's Cupboard was born! Employees of PRA International, friends, family members, Pet Supplies Plus and Pet Food Discounters in Charlottesville and, of course, Madison-Greene Humane Society, jumped in with both paws to make this vision a reality.
